The St. Louis Herb Society’s Herb Booth at “Through the Garden Gate”

Beginning in May, 1960 and repeated each May for the next four years, The St. Louis Herb Society participated in “Through the Garden Gate,” an annual event of exhibitions and sales that was sponsored the Women’s Association of the Missouri Botanical Garden and held in the east parking lot of Famous-Barr’s store in Clayton, St. Louis County, Missouri. Each year, herbs that were grown at the Garden were offered for sale by Herb Society members who also provided information about growing them. In preparation for one of these sales, the Garden’s floriculturalist, Paul A. Kohl, assisted Herb Society members in raising 7500 herb plants from seeds, cuttings, and root division. Each year the Society also provided an Herb Booth where products such as jellies, chutney, curry powder, seasoning salt, mustards, vinegars, and herb teas were sold. The Society’s first cookbook, The St. Louis Herb Society Cookbook, was printed just in time to be offered for sale at the second event in May, 1961.
